I'm close to buying and would like to know what base you use for the RAM mount? (U-bolt or other?)

Also, I think some maps need to be added for it to be useful?

Close to buying what? Come to think of it, RAM mounts are the best value for the money of all the mount systems I've found but Touratech also makes some mounts which are pretty useful, if not cheap. The U bolt is the most versatile.

As Stephanie mentioned, http://www.gpscity.ca/ is a good place to buy from, and they only charge 1 tax so they often end up being the cheapest as well. Also, they're having a special on the 76CSx right now - it's exactly the same as the 60CSx except in a slightly different layout which also floats. Stephanie prefers the 76 form factor but I like the 60 better.

Here's a link to the 76CSx special - it's $100 less than the 60:

If I was buying maps right now I'd get TOPO first.

A GPS... Garmin 60Cx. It's hard to choose, but I need to pick one at some point! http://www.gpscity.ca looks like a nice place.

For the maps, I was wondering if a GPS is of any use without them?? I guess if you make your tracks with way points, you don't necessarily need extra maps?

Garmin GPSs come with basic maps already, but if you use waypoints only and navigate "offroad", ie not using streets, then it will be useful. Just not as useful as it can be with other maps loaded.

You can get a free topo mapset from this site:

And, here is a set of screenshots that I did to show some chaps in Newfoundland what the various maps look like on a GPS. This gives you an idea of the level of detail you can expect at various zoom levels for the different maps. I added the Ibycus set later so it doesn't show in the menu at the beginning of the screenshots, but they appear at the end of the photo album. See the photo captions for names of the maps, and the zoom level is in the lower left of each screen.

Check out the Last issue of the BMA Newsletter. http://bytown-motorcycle-assoc.ca/news_ ... 202009.pdf

There is an article on choosing the best GPS for your application. Watch out for upcoming articles in the next issues of the world famous BMA Newsletters!

Yes, I read the newsletter a few days after it came out. I'm actually in one of the pics, crouched down looking at a GS1150 during an "oil/water" change.

My mind was pretty much set on the 60Cx, I was just waiting for the finance department to approve the order! ;) Then the new touchscreen models looked really nice, but I'm going to wait for a heavy duty touchscreen model before getting one. I'll let others test the reliability!

Actually, I have a 60Cx on order from GPSCity.ca which is between Calgary and here somewhere!
